Learn how to set up and operate your Big Agnes mtnGLO tent lights. This guide covers installation, using the light controller, and tips for even camping lighting.
Quick answer
To use your mtnGLO tent lights, attach the light controller to the tent's built-in cord, connect the lights, and adjust brightness with the controller's button. For best results, place the lights along the tent's ridgeline for even illumination.
Why mtnGLO lights work well for tent lighting
Big Agnes mtnGLO lights are designed to integrate directly into compatible tents, eliminating the need for separate lanterns or headlamps inside your shelter. The system uses a lightweight controller and flexible LED strips that clip onto the tent's interior loops, providing soft, diffused light without harsh shadows.
One trade-off: the system is only available for tents with the mtnGLO-compatible sleeve and cord routing. If your tent lacks this feature, you cannot retrofit it without the built-in components.
Choosing the right mtnGLO components
The mtnGLO system consists of two main parts: the light strips themselves and the light controller. The controller is a small battery-powered unit that manages power and brightness. Replacement controllers are available separately if the original is lost or damaged.
For a unique look, the limited edition Alpenglow colorway offers a warm, sunset-inspired glow. Standard mtnGLO lights are also available in white or multicolor options.
How to install and use your mtnGLO tent lights
- 1. Locate the mtnGLO sleeve and cord: Inside your tent, find the small fabric sleeve near the top of the tent body. Pull the attached cord out of the sleeve. This cord runs along the tent's ridgeline and will hold the light controller. If your tent does not have this sleeve, it is not mtnGLO-compatible. Do not force the cord; it should slide freely.
- 2. Attach the light controller: Slide the light controller onto the cord so the button faces outward. The controller clips onto the cord and stays in place. Make sure the controller is positioned where you can easily reach it from inside the tent. The controller must be secure on the cord. If it slips, adjust the clip or reposition it.
- 3. Connect the light strips: Plug the mtnGLO light strips into the controller. Each strip has a small connector that clicks into the controller's ports. Route the strips along the tent's interior loops or clips, aiming for even coverage across the ceiling. Avoid twisting the strips sharply. They bend but can kink if forced at a tight angle.
- 4. Power on and adjust brightness: Press the button on the light controller to turn the lights on. Press and hold the button to cycle through brightness levels (low, medium, high). Release when you reach the desired brightness. The controller uses a single button for all functions. Pressing quickly toggles on/off; holding adjusts brightness. Practice once to get the feel.
- 5. Test placement and adjust: Sit inside your tent with the lights on. If shadows or dark spots appear, reposition the strips along different loops. For reading or cooking, aim the strips toward the area you need to see. The lights are not waterproof. Keep them inside the tent and away from rain or condensation.
